Beijing AIDS Group Forced to Close

Beijing Loving Source, an AIDS service organization, will close operations following increased pressure from tax authorities in the Chinese government, The Associated Press (AP) reports. The group was founded by Hu Jia, a well-known AIDS activist who is currently serving a 3.5 year prison sentence for pushing authorities to deal with HIV publicly. After the government started regulating overseas donations, the organization ran into financial troubles.

For the first time: China Court to Hear HIV Discrimination Case

A court in China’s Anhui province has agreed to hear a lawsuit involving a prospective schoolteacher who says he was denied a job because he is HIV positive, The New York Times reports. The case is based on a 2006 government regulation stating that “no institution or individual shall discriminate against people living with HIV, AIDS patients and their relatives.” In the four years that the regulation has been in force, this is believed to be the first time that a Chinese court has accepted an HIV discrimination case.

POZ magazine: China lifts 20 year old HIV ban

China lifted its 20-year-old entry ban on foreigners living with HIV, other sexually transmitted infections and leprosy, the Xinhua News Agency reports.  “There are 51 countries in the world which still have such restrictions,” said Mark Stirling, UNAIDS country coordinator. “China’s move will have significant global influence and provide very important leadership.” Stirling added that the regulation changes, which were passed on April 27, will encourage more public dialogue about HIV/AIDS in China, which will help combat stigma and discrimination.  A recent survey showed that 84 percent of Chinese people preferred to keep the ban, which Stirling said reflects the need for HIV education, including how the virus is transmitted.  According to the article, 740,000 people are living with the virus in China and 49,845 have died of AIDS-related illnesses since the country’s first reported case in 1985.
