Announcement: God AIDS Afrika in English

Just a reminder:

From the 3rd of February 2012 the book “God, AIDS, Afrika” published in German language will be published on this blog chapter by chapter in English language. I was asked to do so many times and finally it will happen. I hope the publication will also trigger a debate about the role of churches in the fight against HIV and AIDS worldwide.

New research supports EKAF statement for MSM

Viral load in the blood and rectal secretions of HIV-positive gay men are highly correlated, according to US research published in the September 1st edition of the Journal of Infectious Diseases. The study also showed that the presence of sexually transmitted infections did not increase rectal viral load. Individuals with a plasma viral load above 1000 copies/ml were significantly more likely to have detectable virus in the rectum.  “Our data add substantially to the few published studies of HIV shedding in rectal secretions of MSM [men who have sex with men],” comment the investigators, “we were able to quantify HIV RNA in rectal secretions, demonstrate the linear correlation between increasing plasma load and rectal viral load and determine a threshold plasma viral load that distinguished detectable from undetectable rectal viral load.” They also believe that their findings have important implications for current debates about the use of HIV treatment as prevention, commenting: “Combination antiretroviral therapy will have a similar effect on reducing HIV transmission in MSM, as seen in studies of heterosexual discordant couples.”

School day..

Friday morning – 5h30 leaving Wuerzburg to drive to the Constantin-Vanotti- School in Ueberlingen. It is always amazing to speak to youngsters, in this case 90 students in the age group of 16/17 years old.
What is HIV? Why should we care about HIV in Africa? What does give you motivation? How does your picture of God change? Human rights for HIV positive people? …

There are so many questions and after my intro a lively discussion develops.  At the end I am grateful to have the opportunity to bridge the gap between those living in Ueberlingen and those living in South Africa.

Bridging between South Africa and Germany

Young people know less about condome use..

It is often said by politicians that prevention work is done in sufficient ways.. but polls suggest that there is a lot more to do again…

Therefor more teens are having unprotected sex, and they know less about contraception options like condoms.. More than 6,000 young people from 26 countries were polled on their attitudes toward sex and contraception. In the past three years, teenagers having unsafe sex with a new partner increased by 111 percent in France, 39 percent in the United States and 19 percent in Britain. Many of the study participants lacked accurate knowledge about how to use contraception and protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and HIV. Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals commissioned the study, which was endorsed by 11 international organizations.

Strategic goal of UNAIDS by 2015: 2.Vertical transmission and maternal mortality

UNAIDS strategy goal by 2015:

  • Vertical transmission of HIV eliminated and AIDS-related maternal mortality reduced by half.

The virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission is possible by 2015. Significant progress has been made in the past decade. Infection rates among children born to mothers living with HIV have declined by 26% from 2001 to 2009.  However, much more needs to be done to prevent mothers from dying and babies from becoming infected with HIV. HIV is the leading cause of mortality in women of reproductive age. Without intervention about one in three children born to HIV-infected mothers will be infected.  UNAIDS calls for scaling up access to and the use of quality regimens and services for the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission, ensuring mothers have continued access to HIV treatment, and scaling up access to sexual and reproductive health services and reproductive rights for women and their partners.
