23.04.2010 Grenades

Holiday in the danger zone – so or similar is a title of a series on one of the DSTV channels. Yesterday it felt like it, when only minutes made the difference between staying a couple of meters next to the carnage of some grenades fired into the crowd and being exactly within that crowd. Bangkok seems to offer mor than the usual excitement – I am used in the last years of demonstrations, road and airport closures, political turmoil and much more, but for the first time I am at the spot of action.. which shows that in our days one can not avoid it completely.

This incident tells me a lot about life, and how short it might be – and that we have to live our life to the fullest every day. More is not to say today…

17.04.10 challenging times in Thailand

Bangkok under siege – thousands of so-called “red shirts” are blocking since weeks Bangkok and since days the business centre of the city. People died in clashes between police and demonstrators and the mood is not festive like in other days during songkran, the Thai New Year. My drive from the airport already shows the difference – few cars, no traffic jam – the streets are not packed and even the fun part – throwing water at everyone passing by is accompanied by less joy then otherwise. The big shopping centers in the middle of Bangkok are closed and business is loosing billions of cash and the country lots of tourists.

Since years I travel to Thailand – and since years the political turmoil is visible – two years ago I couldn’t leave the country because the airport was occupied by demonstrators – the year before military rule had taken over and one was greeted by a couple of tanks on the street – well, we will see how it develops the next few days.

And still, the mentality of the Thai population demands that even under these circumstances life has to go on, as normal as possible and obviously with “sanuk“, experiencing a moment of some joy and fun, even in sad circumstances. tackling life to the best of abilities. This is, what I admire, this ability of living life to the fullest in the very moment of existence.

Comparing Thailand and South Africa, there are so many similarities: the good will, but so often failure of government to get it right, corruption on all levels of society, poverty in most parts of the country, the inability of politicians to catch a full picture before making decisions, a complete different sense of logic than we have in the Western world…

But there are fundamental differences: you can walk the streets day and night without being scared of being robbed or mugged – the crime rates are very different. The delicious food one can find day and night at a street corner, the love for good food and the sense for beauty and perfection are other differences.

I feel privileged to be raised in a European society, able to work in an African society and relaxing in an Asian society – the mixture presents me with a openness – some would certainly say: relativism – I personally cherish, even if it leads sometimes to contradictions in my life which are difficult to explain to others.

13.04.2010 Paedophilia and homosexuality

It is indeed tragic that somebody within our church and in high rank one’s again confuses pedophilia and homosexuality – it is as wrong as confusing in connecting pedophilia and celibacy. I must admit that sometimes I am ashamed that we as a church give the impression that we ignore sciences and related studies. Most abuse takes place within families and close circles of relatives and friends around a victims families and most victims are female. We are not allowed to bow tragedies that they fit or support our moral teaching. I wish for an open and honest debate – that we owe the victims.

01.04.2010 Holy days ahead

For us Christians there are now very three very holy days ahead, starting today with Holy Thursday and ending with Easter, the most important feast of Christianity. In between Good Friday which tells a bloody story about suffering and death. I find it always important to have this Good Friday in between – a day where our faith clearly and without any cover up is realising the cruelty of the world, the suffering, the injustice and all what goes with it. But it is also a day where we think of those marginalised today – those suffering of HIV and AIDS, those who are refugees in a foreign country and not welcomed, those in absolute poverty or sentenced without a fair trial. So many people to think of on Good Friday. Last but not least we can also look at ourselves, our wounds, our dark sides, our pain and shortcomings – and we can do this in the knowledge that it belongs to us, it is part of being a human, and that we have to accept most of it, change some of it, but that we all can trust that God will transform all of it to an Easter experience.

I think this counts a lot specially in the days where our church is going to the press because of all the old wounds never revealed. I hope and with that this Good Friday is a Good Day for our church, acknowledging our pain and shortcomings without excuses – that will be the first step to be able to experience also an Easter of our church.

29.03.2010 Holy Week

For us Christian began the Holy Week, ending with Easter Sunday. But instead of having time of meditating the mysteries of the week, the time is packed with meetings, appointments and also liturgy. But the day started on a very sad note: Rainer H. from Switzerland died suddenly and unexpected, just returned home last week from Cape Town in his home country Switzerland. It is always a shock to learn about such news – he was a very special man. And my thoughts and prayers are with Sue and all the family.

And with such a death, the message of Easter becomes very actual as we believe that death is not the end but only a passing over to a new stage in life. Do we really believe it? And if we do so, what does that mean for our life here on earth?

For once I am sure: Rainer and Sues activities towards HOPE Cape Town meant hope and future for a lot of people – and I can pray that he will be rewarded for all he has done for our patients, but also for the sick participating in the pilgrimage to Lourdes over the years. R.I.P or better: Live in the joy of God.
