God, AIDS, Africa & HOPE

Reflections / Gedanken

Transitions continue…

The transition of HOPE Cape Town Association & Trust continues – HOPE Cape Town Association and HOPE Cape Town Trust have now their own YouTube channel. On the HOPE Cape Town Trust channel you can see the newest HOPE Cape Town clip, but also our first one made in 2003.
But not only that: General clips about HIV/AIDS in Africa, small German Advertising clips – still with the old logo – for German cinemas – the feature “Hoffnung am Kap” of the BR (German TV) is on show. A section will show you in the future the work of the trust and the association but also introduce the trustees (long-term goal) – if you find anything suitable on clips please feel free to contact me so that we can add it.
Prominently featured is also the HOPE Gala in Dresden but I sadly noticed that we don’t have material from the Ball of HOPE in Cape Town.

In the coming weeks the boards of HOPE Cape Town Association and Trust will meet to determine the way and working mechanism of close cooperation – all with the sense of responsiblity to make HOPE Cape Town fit for the future and to guarantee a stable environment of our 28 employees and the more than 300 000 clients we see every year.

The Academic field is also getting momentum and in February, the Kath. Stiftungsfachhochschule Muenchen (University of applied sciences) will visit to agree about closer cooperation. Saying this it is always to emphasis that our core work will remain with those living in the township communities and to support the primary health care system in the Western Cape. With our new director (HOPE Cape Association) there is new ideas and solid structures coming in – she is indeed already now a great asset for the organisation.

November till Mid December is always a hectic time in Cape Town – everything should be done before the big Christmas-Summer-Holiday time, but it is good to have a sense, that at the time, this time of leisure begins, we will have put things in place so that we can look forward to begin working in 2012 with a solid groundwork done in 2011 – ending the first 10 years of HOPE Cape Town in existence. During my trip to Germany I once again realised how much we owe those supporting us and giving us the opportunity to serve the communities.

Donations from USA!?

The world is becoming a village – and HOPE Cape Town has been also approached by other persons in other countries who are willing to support the fight against HIV and AIDS in South Africa.
One problem we are facing is that we don’t have the appropriate USA tax number and so being enabled to issue tax -deductible receipt. If somebody reading this knows of any NGO or PBO in the USA, who would be interested in cooperate in different fields, but also channel funds in a legal and tax-deductible way from USA to South Africa, please let me know.
The prospective partner NGO or church or entity should be well established and interested in the work in Africa.

Thanks to Rotary

Thursday afternoon the Rotary Club of Signal Hill as the host club for the matching grant handed over a Nissan Livina Acenta 1,6 to HOPE Cape Town.

The Rotary Clubs and Districts involved with this Matching Grant (for the vehicle and insurance for 3 years) are:
Signal Hill (South Africa)  –   Gelsenkirchen-Schloss Horst  (Germany) – District D1870 (Germany) –  Chateau Salin Dieuze Morhage (France) – District 1790  (France).
The match from The Rotary Foundation and a huge contribution from the Rotary Club of  St Wendel (Germany) in District 1860, which is a District in Future Vision added the necessary funds.

HOPE Cape Town is grateful to all sponsors and supporters, especially as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of HOPE Cape Town Association & Trust and the Rotary Club of Signal Hill is one of the Founding Fathers of the organisation.

Fundraisers for HOPE Cape Town

There are two major fundraiser events for HOPE Cape Town, which happen in Cape Town and Dresden. Every May the “Ball of HOPE” invites its guest for entertainment, live music, a good meal and much more – doing good and feeling good at the same time. This event is always in cooperation with the Southern African – German Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Cape Town Office. Originated from a “dinner-dance” event at the Mount Nelson of the German-speaking Catholic Community Cape Town in 1998 it changed into one the highlights of the social calendar in Cape Town.
The other event is in the German autumn, always the last weekend in October: the HOPE Gala Dresden. Initiated by Saxonia Systems in Dresden, a sponsor of the first hour for HOPE Cape Town (thanks to Andreas and Kathrin Moench, who got married in Cape Town) and organised by Viola Klein the Gala is the major fundraiser event in the east of Germany and developed its own style, drawing guests from all over Germany to Dresden for this event.
HOPE Cape Town is grateful to all and everybody organising the events and those who attend and make the project work together with all the other unsung heroes who give money and energy to help those less fortune.

www.hopegala.de is the website for the HOPE Gala Dresden.

Transformation and development…

After 10 years, it is always good and right to put an organisation to a stress test, as it is called today, meaning to review the strength and the weaknesses and to see which way leads to a good future.  The new director for HOPE Cape Town, the transformation from a management committee to a board, new research and government strategies ask for a good review of our work. After being 5 years in existence more in the shadow of the HOPE Cape Town Association, the HOPE Cape Town Trust is now also asked to define its new role as the guardian of the donations.  It is indeed an exciting time for HOPE Cape Town, even when it means more work then usual, more thinking and more discussion about the right way forward. It is good to have people in both boards who have HOPE Cape Town and its work at their hearts and minds. Mission statements and goals must be adjusted and redefined – there is still lots to do for this year to have this process finished until the next AGM’s are due in January 2012.
And there was today a great news that HOPE Cape Town got a donation which will enable us to start also to work in Manenberg, together with Fr Wim and the Catholic parish. They have already great success with afterschool care provided together with the Amy Biehl Foundation. Partnerships always means to get synergies and to use the resources as best as one can. Transformation is necessary, but the normal work at grass root level goes on as most of the portfolios which enables children and families being affected or infected with HIV to see a light at the end of the horizon.
