Don’t be turned off by the name of this book. It’s meant to catch your attention, and it is clear in reading the book that Pisani has the utmost respect for the people she has spent her life working with. If she has any contempt, it is for the people who continue to propagate myths about AIDS based on personal beliefs and agendas.

The Wisdom of Whores is one of the most interesting and fast-reading nonfiction books I’ve ever read. It is very issue specific – talking solely about HIV/AIDS as opposed to “development” more generally – but the lessons it teaches more generally about how money flows in the development community relate to all major issues. Some of those lessons learned include:

–  When an issue becomes “hot” organizations will flock to it and compete for cash.

–  Aid workers often feel pressure to keep their issue “hot” and…

Tunesia, Egypt, Jemen ..

Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen – Jordan not far and maybe more to come. It is amazing for me to see how people cling on power throughout their life and expect that the position is one of a lifetime. The same we have on other  levels and in other fields:   founders of NGO’s who think they earn a lifetime pedestal in their respective organisation, local public figures, also church personal who clings to title and hierarchy level achieved. Sometimes it seems to me that those people simply don’t know who they are and that they never have achieved the inner maturity to be who they are meant to be. They cling to power, to title, to job because that is what keeps them straight and creates the stability necessary for life. But at the end they all depend on things which are not part of their inner being. There is no freedom of a mature person.

Freedom is always difficult, it is always a challenge, it asks always for decisions – it is so much more stressful than just being told what is black and white, right and wrong and just running life according to these parameters. How often is abuse of people the result. How often is ignorance another result – ignoring the truth, ignoring the people around one as that all is not asked for in such a life. I guess that also the big and small leaders, who cannot let go, are prisoners of their own ignorance, and victims of all those around them, who only articulate what they think the person concerned want to hear.

It is always good to have people who are able, willing and allowed to speak out, draw other scenarios, disagree, advise in an honest way. And prevent that we are so much cushioned in our position that we forget that all we do will have an end, and best is that in most cases we determine when to end a chapter in our life and start a new one. And give at the end others the opportunity to grow and deliver.

I am personally grateful to everybody who is not shy to give advice, to disagree – even if I don’t like it at times ..  🙂 But at the end, they are so necessary for me to find my way through life as a priest, as a co-founder of an NGO and in all the other capacities I have to deal with people and issues.

07.07.2010 Mid of the week…

In the morning meeting with the Regional Council of the Southern African – German Chamber of Commerce and Industry – quite some topics to discuss and develop. In the middle of the day meeting with Fr Wim, my friend priest from Manenberg. As usual so many things to talk about, views to exchange, plans to make – a good time.

Afternoon some thoughts about the future structure of HOPE Cape Town – we have a planing meeting on the 16.7. and we have to discuss the medium and long-term vision of our organisation. HOPE Cape Town is growing – and times are changing – so there is always the need to look after our “state of affair” but also our vision for the next years.  It is important for every NGO to know where we want to head in the next years to come. Decisions have to be made influencing also the working structure of an organisation. But with the energy and dedication of our management I am sure we will come up with good ideas and a solid way into the future.

15.09.2009 15 days to go…

15 days still to go until I will commence my challenge – and after a weekend full of farewell celebrations the daily routine kicks in and I try to focus on finalizing stuff and at the same time preparing for the new portfolio. Now is an interesting time, still in the old job, but already with your thoughts starting to get used to the new one. Amazing 0r schizophrenia? 🙂

I am starting really to look forward to the new challenge, I compile already a list of what I wish to achieve in the first 6 months and preparing for my first overseas trip to Berlin, Wolfsburg, Munich, Berlin, Aachen, Frankfurt and Bitburg in the second half of October. After one year of not being able to plan it is a big relief for me exactly being able to do that. I normally only function well if I have a plan and I can set goals for myself what I want to achieve – and I do this normally for one year ahead.  In my work I am very goal orientated, ask my colleagues – for them it is sometimes very scary. Also that I try to think big – I firmly believe that only thinking big and maybe sometimes even that what seems to be impossible is the only way to achieve the maximum.

And I like to network, to exchange experience; but this seems to be very difficult here in South Africa between NGO’s.  It look to me, that there is no culture of trust but mistrust – everybody has fear to lose out a feather or a sponsor. On the other hand I have seen NGO’s  which in my opinion simply abusing an open hand and mind to gain benefits only for themselves. So at the end mostly either a wall of silence or abuse – such a pity. I am convinced that there is so much to do in this world and also in South Africa that we can join hands and cooperate in an honest way. Wishful thinking? I hope not…
