The Day after the Ball of HOPE

Only people who are also in the business of preparing a gala event know what it means to sit there a day after the event and reflecting on it. All the adrenalin is gone and funny enough one feels drained and somehow empty inside. It seems that all energy is gone but still one cannot find real rest. “Are you happy with the Ball” I was asked several times the next morning, meeting people who slept over at the Westin Hotel and enjoyed their breakfast the very next morning. It sounded to me like a strange question: Yes, of course I was happy that it went without major trouble – all obstacles naturally coming up during such an event were dealt with as soon as Anja and I as the organizers were aware off. And yes, the entertainment program was great and the dance band got the people going – wonderful to see. But it takes at least a couple of days to recover and appreciate all what was happening that very eve. And to digest that for the first time in history, raffle tickets were sold out before all could get a chance to buy some. So amazing…
I am deeply grateful for all of you who joined this annual event on Saturday eve – I hope everybody had a wonderful time, enjoyed our Brooklyn Holy Cross Primary School Senior choir and Chelsea, our 9-year-old singer from Switzerland with her powerful voice , Katlego who did a marvelous job as an MC. And I also hope that you took home the knowledge how you fun that very eve meant hope and life and a future for so many less fortunate in the townships of Cape Town, being troubled by HIV, AIDS and TB and so many associated diseases. All and everybody present made a difference and had a personal impact on the life of somebody whom they never will learn to know in person. What a wonderful and powerful connection…

Follow up…

The reader might remember the trip to Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape before Easter and since then things are moving a bit at least: The water from the mountains is in Cape Town and awaits analysis about content and quality. Sam, our trustee have had a meeting with the representative of the SA-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry and is now going to Johannesburg with Fr Jo to investigate the possibilities of training with the Chamber’s head of training services. Just to give you an idea about the place we visited some pictures:

07.07.2010 Mid of the week…

In the morning meeting with the Regional Council of the Southern African – German Chamber of Commerce and Industry – quite some topics to discuss and develop. In the middle of the day meeting with Fr Wim, my friend priest from Manenberg. As usual so many things to talk about, views to exchange, plans to make – a good time.

Afternoon some thoughts about the future structure of HOPE Cape Town – we have a planing meeting on the 16.7. and we have to discuss the medium and long-term vision of our organisation. HOPE Cape Town is growing – and times are changing – so there is always the need to look after our “state of affair” but also our vision for the next years.  It is important for every NGO to know where we want to head in the next years to come. Decisions have to be made influencing also the working structure of an organisation. But with the energy and dedication of our management I am sure we will come up with good ideas and a solid way into the future.

23.05.2010 After the Ball of HOPE…

Pentecost and the day after the Ball of HOPE – a day of reflection and rest –  maybe more of the latter.. 🙂
A great eve, fantastic guests and most things ran smoothly..  thanks to all and everybody assisting, helping and supporting and special thanks obviously my partner in crime, Anja and Petra from the Mediterranean Villa who helped a great deal with the preparation.

Tomorrow a new week which will see me travel again, this time to Hamburg. But before some days of work @ home – so to speak . Tomorrow is HOPE Cape Town day – meetings the whole morning to discuss a new website design, the portfolios of the senior staff and the budget for the new budget year 2010/11.  And then to the Westin Grand Hotel to settle the final bill and collect all outstanding items left after the ball… Since weeks I want to occupy my new office at pharmacology.. also will be done this week.

Time is flying again – and May almost gone and looking into my diary, June is also quite busy…

22.01.2010 A long day

…draws to an end, beginning at 6 in the morning and ending now after midnight. The last 48 hours have been amazingly divers and interesting. I did not know that I brought so much energy with me from my holidays. Resting a lot seems to have helped to recover and gain the energy needed to tackle the first days after coming back.

A great eve with people from Switzerland ended this evening, good talks, nice food. lovely company. It simply felt good again – sitting outside after the meal and chatting a bit the night away. I once again realised how privileged I am to live and work in South Africa. And I also realised how much people expect from me and how much challenge is still lying ahead. That is enough realisation for one day.

Next week are two major fundraising events for HOPE Cape Town – the Golf tournament at Pearl Valley Golf Estates on Monday and on Tuesday the Horse Auction from the Catholic Men’s Society Milnerton/Brooklyn – at 7pm Milnerton Town Hall. If you have time come and join the crowd, bid on a horse, win and do good at the same time.

And don’t forget to circle in your calendar the 22.5. 2010 – Ball of HOPE – together with the Southern African – German Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Westin Grand Hotel.

And many more exciting events to come. Watch the space.
