God, AIDS, Africa & HOPE

Reflections / Gedanken

Aftermath….

5 weeks on the road – coming home means not only being fairly exhausted, but also happy to have achieved most set goals: It also means to  write reports to the boards, to follow-up with those you promised to keep in touch, to sort out the next steps and last but not least to tackle what is already waiting for you since you left your desk five weeks ago.
The process of restructuring HOPE Cape Town also needs decisions to take and discussions to lead and as the year is coming to an end, the annual report for the trust is also waiting to be written, together with a piece for the explizit.net website and an article for a publication commemorating the 150th anniversary of the German catechetical association. Blessings, services and weddings are also waiting to be prepared – so resting is not an option for the coming week.

But I am grateful for all and everybody I was able to see, speak, encounter in the last weeks – it is amazing how enriched life can be when one is in constant touch with people from all walks of life. A special thanks to the Koblenzer AIDShilfe for their preparation regarding the AIDS action day on the national flower show in Germany and for Viola Klein with Andreas Moench, Saxonia Systems, HOPE Kapstadt Stiftung for the HOPE Gala in Dresden – what an event. Dresden you can be proud of your people.

HOPE Gala Dresden 2011

Thanks to all and everyone for this wonderful evening and a great result bringing HOPE to those marginalized in South Africa – 100 000 Euro means 1 000 000 times more chances to have a dignified life as a person being HIV positive in South Africa. Congratulations to Prof Rita Suessmuth who received the HOPE award 2011. Well deserved!

Fundraisers for HOPE Cape Town

There are two major fundraiser events for HOPE Cape Town, which happen in Cape Town and Dresden. Every May the “Ball of HOPE” invites its guest for entertainment, live music, a good meal and much more – doing good and feeling good at the same time. This event is always in cooperation with the Southern African – German Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Cape Town Office. Originated from a “dinner-dance” event at the Mount Nelson of the German-speaking Catholic Community Cape Town in 1998 it changed into one the highlights of the social calendar in Cape Town.
The other event is in the German autumn, always the last weekend in October: the HOPE Gala Dresden. Initiated by Saxonia Systems in Dresden, a sponsor of the first hour for HOPE Cape Town (thanks to Andreas and Kathrin Moench, who got married in Cape Town) and organised by Viola Klein the Gala is the major fundraiser event in the east of Germany and developed its own style, drawing guests from all over Germany to Dresden for this event.
HOPE Cape Town is grateful to all and everybody organising the events and those who attend and make the project work together with all the other unsung heroes who give money and energy to help those less fortune.

www.hopegala.de is the website for the HOPE Gala Dresden.

01.11.2009 HOPE Gala Dresden afterthoughts

After some hours of sleep and a long brunch with people it this now time to reflect on the HOPE Gala Dresden again. It was a marvellous event, the first “red carpet” charity event in Dresden.  With the Federal Minister of Interior, Thomas de Mezier and wife, many stars and starlets, security and media attention have been marvellous. And the announcement of the cancellation of the announced laudators presence at the gala during the press conference before created also interest, it comes seldom that one hears of a cancelation of a star a week before the event.

The diversity in this programme, singers, pianists, artists contributed to the success and the aftershow- party was great. Lots of good food, music and interesting people. I had lots of good talks and networking was like always a priority. We also had guests coming from St. Wendel and even from Russia to attend the gala. Global village. From all it is clear that the connection Dresden – HOPE Cape Town is a good and developing one – and I do hope that we can develop even a sort of partnership between Dresden and Cape Town. During my next stay in Dresden in will see the mayor of Dresden to discuss possible further connections.

I am grateful to Saxonia Systems and Viola Klein and all those marvellous people who made this evening possible. And as I said at the press conference last Thursday: The love of two people, which lead them to come to Cape Town and being married with my assistance as marriage officer was the beginning of a connection bringing people from Dresden and Cape Town close together. It shows for me clearly that love can move the world, two people, one love, one committment and now hundreds are meanwhile joining to make this connection stronger and stronger every year. It is a fantastic story as only real life can write it.

Another highlight of my stay in Dresden was the possibility to bring people together, I work with and now there is emerging a network so powerful that we will be able to move the world even a bit further. Watch the space – if only half of what is planed will be realised, my life will not be the same again – and that of many other people as well.  And for HOPE Cape Town it means to find even more partner and friends – for our clients it means more hope and a greater future.
