11.03.2010 Abuse cases

Reading about all the abuse cases within the Catholic Church, but also in other institutions makes one sometimes wonder how and why all this could happen. But I also realise how much priests are now in a spotlight – also being easy prey for accusations of all sorts.

And sitting in when it comes to the legal matters as a consequence of an accusation changes the perception of it all once again in many ways….

03.03.2010 Tough times…

I am sure everybody has the experience that sometimes life can be tough – and one goes through times one experience as very hard, but on the other hand also as a very steep learning curve. Mixed feelings of all sorts. That is the reason of being quiet in the last days and not writing as usual almost every day my blog.  I hope to resume writing mid March again after finishing the journey I am traveling in the moment.

26.02.2010 Thank you Telkom

More than 2 days without internet and email – Telkom shows the excellence of South African workmanship: Since Wednesday the system is down – round about 10 calls resulted in at least 5 different versions of what is really happening – one consultant ended the conversation prematurely in hanging up – it is amazing how untrained some of the consultants are. Telkom should at least make sure that its consultant know what an ADSL line is or that they work for such a company.

Speaking to a supervisor seems impossible. The attempt to connect by Nicki ended in a dead-end: “The number you have dialled is not existing anymore…” Thanks Nicki!!

Obviously Telkom recommended that one should report faults via internet 24 hours a day – says the nice voice in between the waiting hours.. Thanks Telkom, specially when you are not able to connect to the internet, this advice is brilliant.

I am typing this with a bundle from MTN – don’t ask me know how many nerves and attempts it has taken to get over the hurdle of RICA and all the other rules and regulations. Even if you are a customer for 13 years – please proof, that you exist – otherwise it is too easy and where would we end if we would consider the customer as those who need service????

Not to forget the ABSA bank, which, having western union as a service provider at N1 City categorical refuses to exchange any currency if one is not an ABSA customer with an account. I am sure, the foreign visitors will appreciate this kind of attitude!

I am sure, all visitors for the world cup 2010 will appreciate the service orientated service provider in South Africa. Well done, you are ready for the world cup 2010!

17.02.2010 Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday and a remarkable full church service in the morning with the pupils of the Holy Cross Primary School in Brooklyn and parishioners. The students had prepared papers were they put on all their misbehavior which were burned during the service. We transformed – so to speak – the guilt into ashes and used it to receive the sign of the cross. Ash Wednesday as the starting day of Lent – a time of reflection, because God has called us to do better as we are in the moment. We are called to listen to our vocation again, and bringing our life in order.

It is not about the chocolate or the 4 kg we like to lose over the 6 weeks – fasting in lent has not its purpose in itself but can only be a symbol for conscience to be developed about how life is treating us and we are treating life. It’s not about ” us sinners”, but us human beings, who need once in a while to clean our compass of life to find the right direction again. In this sense is lent a very important time.

I wish all and everybody a great time of lent and so many new discoveries how life can be even more worth living to the fullest.

14.02.2010 Valentine Day, drugs and social structures..

Three services at Milnerton church, 3 kids baptized, one lekker luncheon and a decent dinner – this weekend had enough of its own but at the end I feel, that I still had enough time to do some office work in between.
Valentine’s Day and I reminded the churchgoers this evening that Valentine was originally a Catholic feast before the Americans took over and commercialized it in a way one cannot see the origin anymore.
On the same weekend it happened that I was reading about the drug war in Mexico – about the mounting dead toll and – according to the article the growing understanding, that the problem cannot be solved militarily.  The article hinted that more and more South American states were thinking about legalizing the drugs and so to strip the black market and all the crime going with it. I am not sure how they want to do it, but I also think meanwhile, seeing all the criminal behaviour attached to recreational drug use, that to ease the restrictions could be a way forward. The Netherlands have shown that legalizing marijuana in a certain way does not mean to get more people on drugs but to ease the work of the police and to relax the situation. Without advocating the complete decriminalization of all drugs I am certainly convinced, that a radical re-think of the problem only can help us to get a grip on the drama, unfolding in many countries of the world.  I am also thinking of medical marijuana for terminal ill or chronically ill persons – why not? It makes sense to me and when I see how easy our society is with alcohol and tobacco, yes – still tobacco if you look at it from a global point – then I guess a re-think would do good in many ways.

Well, I am sure that now some readers are jumping, asking how a priest can advocate such a solution for drugs. I do advocate nothing, but I certainly do think that we have to think out of the box to tackle the problem – especially also in South Africa.

Another article which got me thinking was a German article talking about Mr. Westerwelle attacking the social security system of our system in connection with “Hartz IV”,  which regulates the grant, people without work get in Germany. I am convinced that Hartz IV is against certain human rights and certainly the way it is impemented is against the dignity of people and we have to re-think it again, but in a complete different way than he thinks we should do it. Hartz IV and the poverty, which also affects people living with HIV and AIDS is certainly for Germans a point to reflect on. The staggering attacks of the politician on the social fabric of the German society sounds definitely not right in my point of view but shows how far politicians have distanced themselves from the realities of life.  I agree with him, that is unfair that somebody working can earn less than the grant, but it is not the grant which is wrong but the earning of that person. All this cheap labour, introduced in the last years in Germany in the spell of the delusion that de-regulations of the markets are doing all miracles for the economic grows of  a country, is simply wrong.

Well, you see, lots of food for thoughts – and that just on the Valentines weekend…
