HOPE Gala Dresden 2011

Thanks to all and everyone for this wonderful evening and a great result bringing HOPE to those marginalized in South Africa – 100 000 Euro means 1 000 000 times more chances to have a dignified life as a person being HIV positive in South Africa. Congratulations to Prof Rita Suessmuth who received the HOPE award 2011. Well deserved!

Munich..

Second day in Munich with quite some contacts. Meeting with representatives of the Bavarian Staatskanzlei and discuss matters interesting for both sides. Lots of phone contacts and a discussion for a participation on a brief documentary piece for German TV. Preparation for the meeting tomorrow with the Kath. Stiftungsfachhochschule as well as some sponsors and politicians. Emails and other correspondence are waiting for replies. All in all a full day and a great beginning for the third week. This trip is a blessing indeed and I appreciate the talks, discussions, encounters and communication because it shows that HOPE Cape Town is on the right way and still attractive to many supporters and sponsors. But it is much more than only the question of money – it is good to see that people engage with South Africa and its problems, that they really try to understand our situation @ the Cape of Good Hope. The political turmoil within the ANC, the Malema Saga and much more is of concern for those who want to support South Africa and its NGO’s. So for me this trip is not only about HOPE Cape Town but also about being a bridge and trying to explain the situation which looks from far away so different from the one we living in South Africa can see and experience every day.

Second week in Germany

Time is flying and I am already for 10 days in Germany. The BUGA, talks in St. Augustin @ the SVD seminary (Steyler missionaries)  and the KHG Aachen (Catholic Students Society) – visits to the Kath. Auslandssekretariat der DBK (German Bishops Conference), the German AIDS Foundation, meeting with individuals from church and NGO background and some interviews – sometimes it is difficult for me to exactly remember the date or the number of the hotel room while coming for breakfast in the morning…

Tomorrow I will be in Wuerzburg to meet with G. Stich from the Missionsaerztliche Institut – and then seeing other people before rushing on Friday morning at 6 am in the morning to be in time at a school in Ueberlingen to spend a morning with students. Friday afternoon I am expected in Freiburg and Sunday in Munich. Time is really flying but until now the talks have been beneficial for the cause of HOPE Cape Town or the RC church – new ideas and new perspectives for the work in Cape Town are being formed in my mind and as it looks I also will do pastoral work for the cruise-liner industry once in a while, organised by the Kath. Auslandssekretariat of the DBK.  A new task adding to the variety of my work portfolio.

So until now even the German weather cannot dampen my good mood and spirit and I hope for productive days ahead.

Also thanks to the administration of the Federal Flower Show to allow such a day and make us all feel welcome and at home during the day.

R.I.P. Dr Robert Frascino

HIV and AIDS are not knowing boundaries and the internet is one of the excellent tools to connect people. And astonishing enough you get used to people you don’t know at all but somehow you feel attached. I would say all people living with the virus or working in the field of HIV and AIDS know about the website: thebody.com. A vast source of information and people can write with their experience and problems and there are doctors answering those questions – which means that others can also benefit from the answers by reading them.

Robert James Frascino, M.D. was one of those doctors working for the website and he passed away a couple of days ago – age 59 years old. Known as “Dr. Bob” to so many, he was incredible and inspiring and I loved like thousands others to read his responses: they were qualified but full of compassion, humour and somehow hitting the nail. Dr. Bob was a brilliant immunologist who was working in HIV well before he became HIV positive in 1991. In the mid-90s, he and his husband, Steve Natterstad, M.D. formed a charity called The Robert James Frascino AIDS Foundation which has raised more than $1,500,000 for various HIV/AIDS causes. Each year, Bob and Steve, both pianists, perform at their benefit called A Concerted Effort.

Bob started working with TheBody.com in May 2000 in the Q&A forums. He has touched millions of people through his Q&A forums on HIV prevention and HIV-related fatigue and anemia, as well as his blog. He answered nearly 30,000 questions over that time period — truly astounding. No matter how insane or serious the question, Bob always found a way to bring humor to every response. He never sugar-coated anything, never shied away from his political inclinations and never met a pun he didn’t like. His singular wit made his forums a must read for HIV-positive and HIV-negative people alike.

Dr Bob was one of the familiar faces on the internet, which I grew attached to. And I always promised myself, that my next travel to the USA will include a try to visit him. I truly believe that he was one of the few people who celebrated life to the fullest but at the same time cared much about his fellow men. I will somehow miss him and his answers…… R.I.P.

the late Dr Robert Frascino
