HOPE Cape Town Association – HOPE Doctor

 

HOPE Cape Town, a local non-profit Organisation providing outreach and education in the field of HIV and AIDS and related illnesses, seeks a full time medical doctor to co-manage the HOPE Doctor portfolio.

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

• Project management and support
Planning, initiating and executing HOPE Cape Town Association projects and programs.
• Research
Identify research opportunities; plan and implement formal and informal research with translation into the community
• Clinical work
Provide comprehensive clinical care to children at health care facilities which HOPE Cape Town supports.
• Training
Train and support the HOPE Community Health Workers
Provide mentorship, training and awareness as required
• Other
Interact with donors and media as required
Participate in HOPE Cape Town events

The HOPE Doctor will be based at the HOPE Cape Town offices at Tygerberg Campus, University of Stellenbosch, but will be required to travel to health care facilities and community based projects. The successful candidate will form part of senior staff team. This is a full time position (40 hours per week). He/She will report to the Program Coordinator.

Requirements:
• M.B.Ch.B (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)
• Valid Registration with HPCSA (Health Professions Council South Africa)
• Registration with MPS (Medical Protection Society)
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Superior Communication Skills: Fluent in English (spoken and written); other languages an asset
• Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office)
• Drivers license with independent transport
• No criminal record
• Work permit (if not SA resident)

The following experience and skills would be advantageous:
• Project management and administrative experience
• At least one year’s experience in managing HIV positive patients on ARV treatment (including children)
• Diploma in HIV Management of college of family physicians of South Africa (Dip HIV Man (SA))
• Research experience
• Interest in development within community

Job opening for a medical doctor @ HOPE Cape Town

Job description – HOPE Cape Town Doctor

The role of the HOPE Cape Town Doctor is to provide clinical service in pediatric HIV clinics, support relevant community projects and provide expertise in the training of health care workers and medical elective students. The clinical service will take 50 % and the training duties, the research, project support and general duties will take the other 50 % of task and duties. That means in detail:

Clinical duties

o Provide comprehensive clinical care to HIV infected children and adults at Tygerberg Hospital and peripheral clinics and communities

o Maintain good relationships with medical staff at Tygerberg Hospital and peripheral clinics in the communities by attending relevant meetings and ward rounds

o Responsible for the organization of the yearly Christmas party and other events for HIV positive children in the communities

 

Training duties

o Train and support HOPE Cape Town Community Health Workers (HCHW’s)

o With special focus on newly employed HCHW’s during their probation period

o Develop and teach an user friendly course for HCHW based on UNISA-text book “HIV care and counselling course”

o Develop HCHW’s annual training programme

o Responsible for the annual training content for the HCHW’s

o Develop training material and modules

o develop training material and modules of good quality for HWSETA accreditation

o eLearning

o responsible for teaching and training of all e Learning material

o supervision of the e Learning project and keep the contacts with all relevant role players

o Provide external training and awareness as required

o Train and supervise Medical Elective Students of the HOPE – KID CRU Elective

 

Applied research duties

o  Identify research opportunities based on demonstrated needs

o Plan and implement formal and informal research

 

Project support and general duties

o Liaison and networking with all relevant role players pertaining to all other relevant duties

o Provide medical information and expertise to non-medical personnel

o Assist in planning, initiating and executing HOPE Cape Town projects and programmes

o Provide consultative services for external collaborations

o Do media interviews and articles as required

o Attend training and meetings, like ward rounds and medical meeting, staff and other meetings

Program Facilitator

 

HOPE Cape Town is a local non-profit organization providing outreach and education on HIV and AIDS in the Western Cape Province. The program of Hope comprises in that connection several projects. The Program Facilitator position is responsible for planning and carrying out these projects.

The incumbent should personify the values and objectives of HOPE Cape Town combining stability and guidance with vision.  The Facilitator works with and reports to the chairperson of the Association and works in close contact with all staff, management, volunteers, consultants, trustees and other bodies associated with HOPE Cape Town.

Position functions include meeting program and development goals, evaluation and having the oversight of the HOPE Cape Town Association programmes.

  • Drafts correspondence, proposals and reports for portfolios and programmes (as required)
  • Assists with Annual Report
  • Liaises with HOPE doctor and HOPE Outreach Facilitator
  • Provides Budget overviews for individual programmes and drafts funding proposals as required
  • Provides evaluation for all HOPE Cape Town related programmes
  • Visits together with the HOPE Outreach facilitator clinics and employees in the fields and ensures proper evaluation
  • Represents HOPE Cape Town at community meetings, networking and fundraising events related to local programmes as may be required
  • Provides evaluation and feedback to the chairperson
  • Participates in the semi-annual medium and long-term planning meetings
  • Has an overall responsibility for the further development of HOPE Cape Town portfolios
  • Attends Senior Staff meeting and HCHW Training sessions as required

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education:  Undergraduate degree (graduate studies preferred)
  • Able to communicate (verbal and written) and integrate information in English, basic German and/or willingness to develop the German language skill, Afrikaans as a bonus
  • Strong interpersonal skills, multicultural experience
  • Operates on the basis of consensus
  • At ease with people of different social backgrounds
  • Background in community and development work with emphasis on HIV and AIDS
  • Professional understanding and exposure to the objectives and management of an NGO
  • Human resource and development experience
  • Available to work flexible hours and travel
  • Successful completion of UNISA HIV and AIDS Counselling Course or equivalent
  • Computer literate
  • Drivers license, personal car, no criminal record
